Dashcam Evidence (Alleged Murder Scene)
There is a useful summary on the website of The Guardian.
Please note: This footage shows someone being shot. It is at a distance but that is what can be seen.
There is the growing use of dashcams (dashboard video cameras) and bodycams (bodyworn video cameras) by police officers. This video shows how a dashcam captured the shooting of a suspect (armed with a knife) by a Chicago Police Officer. This footage has been released by the police department and the officer is currently under arrest.
This is a good example of how digital technology oermits the capturing of video evidence.
This incident has led to a rise in tension in some communities in Chaicago and elsehwere.
This is because it has to be set i nthe context of a campagin called Black Lives Matter, which is a response to a large number of incidents in which black citizens (mainly young men) have been shot by police officers in various parts of the United States.
The presence of the camera (a form of CCTV if you will) did not prevent the alleged crime taking place. However it does provide useful corrobative evidence (if considered permissable) in any future trial. The release of the footage is unsual since it might potetnially prejudice a future fair trial.
I say again: This footage shows someone being shot. It is at a distance but that is what can be seen.
