ABC News Report on Nigerian Scamming

Nigerian Scamming news clip. A couple of things of immediate interest is that the global network allows people in places like Nigeria to communicate with possible victims in places which are a long way from Nigeria. There also seems to be some indication that the criminal activities are driven by motivations to gain money and in some instances (as suggested by recent research) there is a cultural element of "revenge" against what are perceived as rich white victims. Of course the victims are not always white but they are often from Western countries.

So how might Twitter have managed that issue? Or is all publicity good publicity? After all lots of people now know about their new service - Vine. I heard it through the Grape Twitter Vine...

Web Redefining Who We Are?

Nice little article on the BBC website looking at how the web may be redefining who we are and how we see ourselves. "This can be a positive force, exemplified by the solidarity seen in the London 2012 Olympics or a destructive force, for example the 2011 riots," says the report. "Due to the development of smart phones, social networks and the trend towards (greater) connectivity disparate groups can be more easily mobilised where their interests temporarily coincide." "This latest report on identity undertook 20 separate reviews in which leading UK and international experts assessed research in computer science, criminology and social sciences."
